Manicouagan

Background

The Manicouagan Peninsula is located on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence Estuary, west of the city of Baie-Comeau. This marine environment is one of the most productive areas in the St. Lawrence River. As a matter of fact, salted water of the estuary and fresh water of Betsiamites, Outardes and Manicouagan rivers converge at this point creating temperature, salinity and food conditions that are favourable for the growth of microscopic algae. This phytoplankton is the basis of the food chain and attracts many invertebrates, fish, whales, seals and birds that feed on it and on each other. Many salt marshes are found in the area as well as eelgrass beds which serve as shelter, food and breeding ground for many marine species. The largest clam beds in Quebec is found in the sandflats which also provide resting and whelping areas for the only all year-round resident seal in the St. Lawrence: the harbour seal. Some endangered species can also be found around the Manicouagan Peninsula such as the blue whale, beluga whale, harbour porpoise, fin whale, Atlantic cod, Striped bass and American eels.

Threats

  • Salt marshes damage.
  • Commercial overharvesting of softshell clams.
  • Destruction of endangered species’ habitats (pollution, human activities, coastal development).
  • Water contamination because of inappropriate water treatment plans.
  • Oil spill issues
  • Climate change

Protection attempt

In 1998, following a proposition from the Parc Nature de Pointe-aux-Outardes, Fisheries and Oceans Canada selected the Manicouagan peninsula area to become a Marine Protected Area (MPA). This MPA would be protecting 543 km2 of coastal and marine portions between Manicouagan River and Betsiamites River and would extend offshore to the 300 m isobaths (Laurentien Through). Public consultations revealed its approbation for such MPA. Since 2006, the project seems to be on hold because it is not created yet.

CPAWS’ Mission

CPAWS has the duty to promote the establishment of the MPA Manicouagan to protect this biodiversed and so productive habitats.
