From Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park to the Atlantic shores of the Maritime Provinces, Canada's Eastern Woodlands carpet the ancient ridges of the southern Canadian Shield and the Appalachian Mountain range, and roll down onto the coastal plains of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
Covering more than 550 000 km2, close to 70 % of our forested areas, Québec’s boreal forest constitutes an important pat of the 20% of the plant’s surviving virgin forest*. As in all of eastern North America, it is dominated by the black spruce, a species that does not exist anywhere else.

Symbolic of Canada's national identity, our parks need vigilant management.

With the establishment of the Saguenay- St. Lawrence Marine Park in 1997 the province of Quebec became a pioneer in the establishment of marine parks in Canada. While the ultimate goal is protection of the site, marine parks are also part of the tourism industry and as such, the parks are used to promote the education of visitors about marine ecosystems.
